La Fonda Del Oso: Pumpkin Spice Yogurt

Hello and happy Fall!

In anticipation of our very first soccer match last weekend, I wanted to make sure Ces and I got on the field fed and ready to coach and cheer on our team. I was looking for a quick and easy breakfast and came across this recipe from the blog Family Chic.

Ingredients:
Chobani Greek Yogurt
Canned Pumpkin
Brown Sugar
Powdered Cinnamon

This really is as simple as mixing the yogurt and pumpkin together, topping it off with brown sugar and cinnamon to give it that "Pumpkin Spice" that is synonymous with Fall.

Left overs where stored back in the yogurt container and were great week-long breakfast options. Ces' verdict? "Amor this is delicious!".

Needless to say, pumpkin pie yogurt will be a pre-game staple for us this Fall soccer season. Enjoy!

Foodie: Lomo Saltado

This week while running some errands for my upcoming trip to London during my lunch break I came across this little gem:

Yep - its a brand new food stand parked in mid-town Manhattan and another yummy lunch option to explore. The menu looked great and I decided to go for Lomo Saltado a traditional Peruvian dish with Asian influences.

The verdict? A satisfying and delicious carb overload! If you are ever in search of a quick midtown lunch spot, look for Manos Peruanas located on 47th Street between 6th & 7th Avenues.

La Fonda Del Oso: Jalapeno Hawaiian Pizza

After a busy week (soccer meetings, team practice and meeting friends for dinner) Thursday night we were finally able to enjoy a home-cooked meal. So yesterday I pulled ingredients from the fridge took out the Trader Joe's pizza dough and got to work on pizza night.

I used a variation of this pizza sauce recipe using only the ingredients I had on-hand.

Sauce ingredients:
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
6 ounces of warm water
1 teaspoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons honey
3/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
1/8 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes.

I stretched out the pizza dough into a rectangle and brushed on the sauce. (I apologize for my ugly burnt cookie sheet, but hey this is real life).

I added some toppings I already had. I used a Mexican cheese blend that we keep handy for those late-night quesadillas, ham, frozen pineapple chunks and left over jalapeno peppers from our Sunday cook-out.

Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes and dinner is served.

A homemade pizza is easy, cheap (about a buck for the pizza dough) and healthier than its frozen store-bought counterpart.

It's not delivery, it's homemade!

Weekly Chicome {9/3 - 9/9}

Hello! This week's chicome is coming to you with only a couple of pictures, I dropped my iphone in a kitchen sink full of water on Sunday night (boo!). I'm holding out hope for a miracle to happen in a tub of rice because I have some recipes and projects from the weekend I want to share with ya'll.  Nevertheless, here are the positive 7 of the week!

{1}. Labor day! A Monday off from work, need I say more?

{2}. The arrival of Autumn, by far my favorite season! Crisp air, cardigans, crunchy leaves and cozy blankets make this girl very happy.   I also get inspired to try heartier recipes when the weather cools down and you can't forget about Sunday Funday (football + wings + beer) becoming the new normal.

{3}. Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte - perfect for those cool Saturday morning walks with the pup.

{4}. This week Ces and I helped out at try-outs for the Roosevelt Island Youth Soccer League. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon and we were amazed to see some of the skills the kids have. Looking forward to the start of the season!

{5}. I attended the opening reception of In Reference To at the Soho Photo Gallery. This photographic project documents Mexican female immigrants across the United States and their treasured object. I'm honored to be featured in this work.

{6}. Another Sundevil win! On Saturday ASU played Illinois, final score: 45-17. We are 2 - 0!

{7}. Pre-phone dropping incident, Ces and I had a lovely cookout on the island Sunday. I tried this sweet potato recipe and it came out delicious!

La Fonda Del Oso: Chipotle Mushroom Wraps

Hello and Happy Friday!

I want to share with you a delicious, healthy and ridiculously easy recipe.

Ingredients:
6 Whole wheat wraps
2 Tablespoons olive oil
1 Onion chopped
2 Garlic cloves
4 Cups mushrooms
3 Chipotle peppers plus adobo sauce to taste
Avocado
Greek yogurt

Heat olive oil in large frying pan, add the onion, garlic mushrooms and chipotles and cook for about 10 minutes or until onion and mushrooms are tender.

Serve on a whole wheat wrap and dress it up with some avocado slices and plain Greek yogurt to take the heat off.

You could also add this as a topping on nachos or incorporate it into quesadillas. Simple and delicious!

Hogar: Dresser Makeover

I took advantage of the long weekend to tackle a dresser makeover. I have a much larger dresser that is in need of refurbishing but for my first project I decided to start with a more manageable piece.

I came across this tutorial  from Love, Pomegranate House on how to paint laminate furniture so I set out to Home Depot ready to make-over my boring K-Mart laminate dresser.

Sanding paper, primer, paint, sealer, brushes and new knobs

Before

I started by lightly sanding the entire dresser, this makes little grooves and creases in the laminate which will make the primer and paint adhere better.

Next I applied one coat of primer with a bristle brush.

After the primer had dried, I applied 3 coats of Behr white paint allowing plenty of time for each coat to dry. Once the third coat of paint was dry I applied 2 coats of sealant to give it a smooth finish.

The last step in the makeover was switching out the old knobs for new glass ones.

After

The new look goes great with the rest of the bedroom and I am now feeling confident to refurbish the larger dresser!

Weekly Chicome {8/27 - 9/2}

Hello! Here are some of my favorite things from this past week!

{1}. Ces and I have signed up to be soccer coaches for the Roosevelt Island Youth League. We get to meet our team this week (9-10 year olds) and are excited for our first match on September 15th!

{2}. This week I booked my work trip to London and was able to sneak in a couple of days for a trip to Bordeaux to visit my brother. Two more stamps on the passport, very excited!

{3}. Last Tuesday Ces and I went to Toloache 5th Anniversary Celebration. We spent the night with friends, dancing salsa and sipping on $5 mezcal and tequila cocktails. The Mezcalita de Pina was by far by favorite one.

Mezcal Tasting @ Toloache

{4}. The return of SunDevil Football (we crushed NAU 63-6)!

{5}. This week marked my sixth year as a New Yorker.

{6}. My largest scoring word ever! I lose more that I win at Words with Friends so it was a "woot woot" moment when I scored a 72 point word (not sure how that happened).

{7.} A long weekend and spending quality time with girlfriends. I took advantage of  the long weekend by  having drinks with Isa on Friday, brunch with Crissy on Sunday and KP & Des on Monday.

Good drinks & cool locations
